Overview


Biotech research generates such massive volumes of information, so quickly that we need newer and swifter ways of crunching the deluge of data (much of it hopelessly jumbled) churned out by the research labs. Mining, digitizing and indexing this enormous quantum of data requires high-end computational technology and sophisticated software solutions. Representing a marriage of IT and Biotechnology, Bioinformatics is poised to be one of the most prodigious growth areas in the next two decades.

Currently valued at around $ 1 billion, the industry is expected to grow exponentially over the next 10 years stretching the very boundaries of Biotechnology, transforming an essentially lab-based science into an information science, yielding rare biological insights and hastening the discovery of new drugs. Globally, the biotech-computing sector has touched a whopping $ 30 billion in 2005 and expected to reach $ 60 billion in 2009. This in turn, will create a corresponding boom in job opportunities.

The Department of Life Sciences offers M.Sc., B.Sc. in Bioinformatics


Course Objectives


Bioinformatics at the interface between two of the most influential scientific fields i.e. an appreciation of computational and biological sciences, in particular, the terminology employed in both field and is essential for those working at such an interface. These courses aim to cover the following:

  • The concepts of computer sciences that relate to problems in biological sciences.
  • Commercial and academic perspectives on bioinformatics.
  • The impact of bioinformatics on the methodologies used in biological sciences.
  • The influence biological science has on computing sciences.
  • Complex and extensive public and private biological information sources anticipate a deep change in methods for finding knowledge in the life sciences and the courses are designed to provide trained and skilled professionals that are required in this field and in the industry.

Bachelors in Life Sciences / Computer Sciences, BE/B.Tech (Computer Sciences or information Technology/Electronics), MBBS, B.Pharma

MSC-BI 2 Years 4 Years -Do- To be paid as 1 & 2nd Sem: Rs. 11,700/- each 3rd & 4th Sem: Rs. 12,200/- each.
MSC-BI-LE 1 Year 3 Years PGDBI To be paid in 2 installments of Rs. 12,700/- each.

What type of people Bioinformatics require?


Companies need cross-functional work force at all levels, biologists with IT skills, or IT professionals with a serious interest in biology (just one of the skills is not enough) who can offer complete cost-effective database solutions to pharma and genome-based biotech companies all over the world.


Employment Opportunities in India


There will be 10% annual growth in the Bioinformatics market for years to come; and the National Science Foundation estimated that 20,000 new jobs in the field would be created in the field in just the next four years. The market for Bioinformatics-based services and databases experts say, could well surpass $ 2 billion in a couple of years, though a large part of the global bioinformatics market is centered around the US. Significantly, the growing interest in Bioinformatics, industry watchers say, may even lead to an acute shortage of experts in this segment worldwide. With its strengths in mathematics, computing, physics and chemistry, the country is positioned ideally to emerge a frontrunner in bioinformatics. The need for new algorithms and new software tools places India in an advantageous position.

There are different types of career opportunities available for different stream of students.

Life Sciences: Scientific Curator, Gene Analyst, Protein Analyst, Phylogenetist, Research Scientist/Associate

Computer Science/Engineering: Data Base Programmer, Bio-Informatics Software Developer, Computational Biologist, Network Administrator/Analyst.

Applied Science: Structural Analyst, Molecular Modeler, Bio- Statistician, Biomechanics, and Database Programmer.

Pharmaceutical Science: Cheminformatician, Pharmacogenetician, Pharmacogenomics, Research Scientist/ Associate.


How much salary did Bio-informatician get in India?


Starting with a package of Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000, the going price for bio-informaticians with a year's experience is upwards Rs 50,000 per month. Starting salaries in the USA range between $ 60,000 and $ 90,000 for professionals with a couple of years of experience
